A Boutis-liscious finish for TGIFF

Welcome to this week's TGIFF link party.

( I know my days and dates are all out of whack this week so apologies for posting this too early!)

I have finished my first ever Boutis project, it is definitely small but I am nonetheless thrilled with how it turned out! The project is part of a larger undertaking by my EG branch, where we were all invited to take a small piece of board and sign up to make a piece for the the board using a particular stitch technique. I chose to try my hand at Boutis, as I had been wanting to give it a go for a while and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

I traced a Celtic Knot pattern on my Batiste fabric and basted the traced fabric to a square of white cotton then placed them in the hoop.

Using DMC Coton a Broder 20 I backstitched over the traced lines.

The work is then turned over in the hoop so that the back of the stitching is uppermost. My book tells me then to stuff between the stitched lines with cotton yarn, and recommends threading the stuffing needle with cotton thread and using it to "lasso" the cotton yarn to pull it through between the stitching and layers of fabric. Well, I just couldn't get that to work for me at all, so I just threaded the stuffing needle with the cotton yarn and pulled it through on its own, and it worked just fine. You can see the ends of the yarn in the photo above. Thank goodness for my Karen Kay Buckley Scissors, they made short work of snipping off those ends :)

When the stuffing and snipping was complete this is what I ended up with.

The fabric didn't completely hide the board backing so I backed it with a small piece of white wadding and then pinned it to the board, before lacing the back.

I blanket stitched a piece of white felt to cover the back and it is now ready to join the other stitched pieces. The plan is ( I think) to join them together in some manner to make a wall hanging for the upcoming exhibition, but for now I am just relieved to have successfully completed my first ever piece of Boutis work :)

Now it is your turn to show off your finishes. Check out some of the other linkers too and share the joy of that heady finished feeling :)

Don't forget to add the blog button to your post or sidebar so that your readers can join in the fun too!

If you would like to host a TGIFF link party there are still some spaces left in the schedule. Head over here to sign up!

New to Me and You in 2016

Welcome to the first New to Me of 2016. Of course, as it is a new year we need a new button :)

For those of you new to the New to Me link party, it is where we celebrate the trying of something new, whether the attempt was successful or not!

My New to Me projects have been a real mixed bunch this month, I have

joined a new local quilt group! The group meets every week for 5 hours, so that should mean that I get lots of work done on the day, shouldn't it ??

I have tried my hand at some tiny tapestries, and might just have discovered a new addiction :)

I have also added a new tutorial to the Ho, Ho, Ho and on We Sew archive (link at the top of the page) with my Christmas Card Hanger tutorial.

Speaking of Ho, Ho, Ho and on We Sew I have been lucky enough to have on board a host of new, generous sponsors for the monthly giveaway prizes. This month's prize, seen above, provided by CICO books being one of them. You can be in with a chance of winning this great prize by linking up your Christmas and Holiday makes here

I have also tried a new embroidery stitch for the roof of my sewing box embroidery, and used the lovely hand-dyed thread from 21st Century yarns for the first time whilst I was at it.

So, that's my New to Me projects this month now it is your turn. As ever please help to spread the word by linking back to this post in your post and/or adding the blog button to your sidebar.

Check out the other links too and, maybe, leave an encouraging comment along the way. The emphasis of this link party is to celebrate the trying so a little encouragement here and there would not go amiss!

The link will remain open until 23.59GMT on January 31st, so you have some time yet to try something new and link up and join the party :)

Ho,Ho, Ho and on We Sew July

Well, the good news is that it is only July, the bad news is that it is all downhill from here on in as far as getting ahead for Christmas is concerned! Don't say that I didn't warn you :) In an attempt to have you all organised for Christmas today's post comes courtesy of the monthly link party.

Due to holiday, hen parties and sundry other distractions my own Christmas preparations have been rather limited this month, I am willing to admit. I have though, managed to make one Christmas-themed placemat for my son and his wife-to-be, and once I get some more of the plain red fabric I might even manage to make the second of the set of two!

Spin Placemat
You can find the pattern for the placemat here

Hopefully, there will be a partner to join it soon!

This month's link party is hosted by the very talented Nicole, at Modern Handcraft, if you haven't already come across Nicole, she is definitely worth checking out. Modern Handcraft is a treasure trove of great tutorials and fabulous projects. I think you will love what Nicole has come up with for the link party!

As ever there is a great prize waiting for one lucky linker, this time it is this lovely scrap pack courtesy of the lovely Alice at Backstitch, one of my favourite online retailers :) Last month's winner of the mini charm pack was the very talented Carla who linked up her Christmas quilt.

If you are new to the party, let me fill you in on the details. Paula and I decided at the end of last year that Christmas 2014 was going to be different, this time round there would be no late-night sewing sessions or frantic last-minute dashes to the Post Office. This time we were going to work on Christmas and Holiday projects throughout the year so come December we would be so organised we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves :)

We decided to share our plans with our blogging friends and invite them to be organised too, with a monthly Link Party to provide a gentle nudge. In addition, each month we have a giveaway prize for one lucky linker!

So, if you want to be in with a chance of winning this to help you get ahead of the pack with your Christmas crafting head on over to Modern Handcraft and link up your Christmas and Holiday projects for July.

As ever we are very grateful to all of our lovely sponsors, who have generously provided a lovely variety of prizes to tempt you.

Ho, Ho, Ho and on We Sew April Link Party

With Winter all but out of the way here Christmas past is an almost forgotten memory and Christmas to come seems like such a long way away. However, Paula and I continue in our efforts to encourage you to get ahead this year with our monthly Link Party.

This month we have a lovely mini winter-themed Cross Stitch kit for one lucky linker, courtesy of the lovely Rachel at

Ray Stitch Haberdashery
http://www.raystitch.co.uk/

To win, all you need do is link up a Christmas- themed or gift project that you have created this month and you could be the randomly drawn winner. So, not only will you have one reason for feeling smug by having a Christmas project done and dusted already, but you could be a winner too :)

This month's Link Party is hosted by Karen at Practically Pippy, who happens to have been the winner of last month's thread bundle from Fluffy Sheep Quilting :) Don't worry winning the giveaway doesn't mean that you will be asked to host the next Link Party!

As ever I would like to thank all of our lovely prize sponsors for their generosity in supporting our efforts to make this your most organised Christmas crafting year yet!

I do have a Christmas gift project made and tucked away for December, but it has to remain secret for a while longer, so all I can show you is this sneak peek!

Liberty and Lace, weren't they just made for each other? There is also a bit of linen and Lizzie House in this project too, how much alliteration can one person fit in a project :) ??

Head on over to Karen and get linking up those projects!

As ever you have until the end of the month to link up, so there is still lots of time to finish off that project that is on your to-do list every December but then put away every January for next year! This year we are going to be so organised we won't know what to do with ourselves in the run-up to Christmas :)

New to Me in February

It's the 25th of the month, which means that it is time to look back on February to see what we have tried that is New to You this month.

Maybe it's because February is a short month but it feels that I haven't tried out very much that is New to Me this month. I have, however, a big (to me anyway!) new activity to report!

Visit Celtic Thistle's Craftsy Pattern Store »

I have opened a Craftsy Pattern Store!!! At the moment there is only one, free pattern in the store so I am certainly not going to be making my fortune from it :) Still, I have wanted to write up a pattern for this Luckenbooth applique for a long time, so I am thrilled to bits to have finally done it. I am even more thrilled that 90+ Craftsy members liked the look of the pattern enough to download it too :) I already have plans for the next pattern, I just have to get my head around the technology to get what I have in my head into pattern form!

Winter
Prague in Winter http://www.praguewelcome.cz

When you read this I will be experiencing my second New to Me activity this month as we have headed off to Prague for a few days. We have never visited Prague before so we are looking forward to exploring this beautiful city.

Now, it's your turn to link up what you have been trying out this month.

As ever please help to spread the word by linking back to this post in your post and/or adding the blog button to your sidebar.

Check out the other links and leave a comment along the way. The emphasis of this link party is to celebrate the trying of something new, whether it works out exactly as planned or not, so a little encouragement here and there would not go amiss!

The link will remain open until 23.59GMT on February 28th, so if you have been inspired by the Winter Olympics or trying to escape the snow, floods or heat there is still time to try something new and link up and join the party :)

There is still time to link up to the Ho,Ho,Ho and on We Sew link party too

So, if you have made a start on your Christmas/Holiday gifts or decorations this month check out February's post and link here

All links will be entered into the random draw to win this great addition to your Holiday sewing library.

Ho, Ho, Ho and on We Sew - February Link Up and Coffee Lovers Set

Paula and I are delighted to welcome you to the second of our monthly Ho,Ho,Ho and on We Sew Link Parties. With the Winter Olympics in full swing and the first snow of the winter here last week, it doesn't seem so strange to  be planning a Christmas project :)

Thanks to the lovely bloggers who linked up last month with Paula at Mud, Pies and Pins, and thanks especially to Kristy and Alyce who provided the great pattern giveaway for January, which was won by Karen

This month's giveaway is another wonderful prize donated by Helen of Bustle and Sew, if you win this prize you will have plenty of inspiration for this year's Christmas and Holiday gifts. Helen has very kindly donated a copy of her Handstitched Christmas eBook!

There are 15 great Christmas patterns for you to try in the eBook, and with patterns ranging from Carol singing mice to Reindeer Tote Bags, there is bound to be something to take your fancy :) You can find details of all the patterns in the ebook here

To be in with a chance of winning the eBook, all you need do is link up below a Christmas project that you have completed this month. A random winner will be picked from all of the entries linked by the end of the month.

If you are struggling to think of a project to make how about this Coffee Lovers gift set?

Coffee Lovers Gift Set
The set comprises of a Place Mat, Mug Cosy and Cafetiere/French Press/Coffee Plunger Cosy and would make a lovely gift for a Coffee-loving friend or relation. This one is destined for my Sister-in-Law!

To make the gift set you will need the following supplies;

1FQ Christmas fabric for the exterior of the Cosies and star of the placemat
0.5yard fabric for the backing of the placemat and lining of the Cosies. (You will have enough fabric to use for the binding and button loops if you wish)
1F8th of 2 contrast fabrics for the placemat front and binding
Scrap of ribbon (optional) for button closure
0.5yard Insul-Bright heat-resistant wadding/batting
3 red buttons

The Cafetiere/French Press/Coffee Plunger and Mug Cosies are made in the same way, the only difference is in the dimensions.

Creating the quilted fabric

Measure the width and height of your Mug and Cafetiere and cut pieces of your exterior fabric to match these dimensions plus 0.5" all round. Cut pieces of the wadding and exterior fabric to the original dimensions plus 1" all round. Layer up the pieces in the following order;

  • Top          - Exterior Fabric
  • Middle     - Heat-resistant wadding, shiny side down
  • Bottom    - Backing Fabric
Pin baste the fabrics together and quilt.

I quilted a FMQ holly design using Aurifil 50wt shade 2892, can you tell that I am having fun experimenting with the modified FMQ foot??

I found it helped to draw the motif out on a notepad beforehand and refer to it when I was stitching.

When you have quilted your fabric pieces, trim them to the dimensions of your Cafetiere and Mug. For information my pieces were trimmed to the following dimensions;

  • Cafetiere - Height 6" Width 11"
  • Mug        - Height 3.25" Width 9.25"

Button Loops

I made two different button loop closures, a ribbon loop closure and a fabric loop closure. If I was making the set again I think that I would make both closures fabric loop closures as it seems sturdier. If you choose to make a ribbon loop closure you will just need a length of ribbon that is twice the gap between the edges of your cosy plus 0.5" and thin enough to fit between the handles of the mug or Cafetiere.

If you are making a fabric loop closure you will need a piece of fabric 1.5" wide and to the same measurement as the ribbon loop given above.

Fold the fabric strip in half lengthways wrong sides together and press, then open out the folded strip and fold the raw edges into the centre fold and press again. Fold the strip in half again lengthways giving you a fabric strip that now has one closed folded edge and one open folded edge. Topstitch along the length of the open folded edge.

Fold the topstitched strip in half widthways and with the raw edges side by side flatten the top fold to make a V-shaped fold. Stitch across the bottom of the V

You can see this more clearly in the photo above.

Binding

Cut and piece together sufficient 2" binding strips to bind your Cafetiere and Mug Cosies. Fold the pieced strips in half lengthways and press.

Mark the halfway point of one short edge and pin the button loop or ribbon closure to the backing, matching the raw edges. Stitch the loop closure to the cosy using a scant 0.25" seam to ensure that the stitching will not show when the binding is attached.

With raw edges together pin and stitch the binding strip around the exterior edge of the cosy, mitring the corners as you go.

Fold the binding over to the back of the cosy and handstitch the binding, catching the button loop closure or ribbon closure as you go.

Attach a red button to the middle of the opposite short edge on the exterior.

Wrap your cosy around a Cafetiere and Mug and enjoy a long, hot mug of coffee!

To finish off your gift set though, how about a quilted placemat to match?

Piecing a block for the placemat

From your fabrics cut the following;

Christmas fabric
  • 8 x 3 and 7/8" triangles
  • 1 x 6.5" square
First contrast fabric
  • 8 x 3 and 7/8" triangles
 Second contrast fabric
  • 4 x 3.5" squares
  • 2" x 54" binding strip
Join the Christmas fabric triangles to the First contrast fabric triangles and then join the resultant squares to another pair to make 4 pairs.

The Christmas fabric triangles will only be joined at the points to make the points of the star as shown above.

To two of the pairs join a second contrast fabric square at each end of the pair.

Join the remaining pairs to opposite sides of the 6.5" square, making sure that the star points are facing in the right direction to complete the star.

Quilting the placemat

Layer and baste the placemat pieces and quilt. I outline quilted the star shape just for a change :)

Binding

Square up the block and then bind the placemat in the same way that you bound the cosies except without the incorporation of the button loops.

Admire your work then squirrel the set away for Christmas and congratulate yourself on ticking a gift off the list so early :)

If you are looking for some Christmas-themed fabric for your makes, the 50% off sale is still on at The Fat Quarter Christmas Cloth store, just saying :)

I plan to add a bag of Christmas Coffee and maybe some handmade truffles to this set when the time comes!

This is also one of my finishes for Q1 of the FAL!

Finish Along 2014

So, now it is your turn. Link up your Christmas/Holiday/Gift projects to be in with a chance of winning this month's giveaway.

The Link Party will remain open until 23.59GMT on February 28th, so you still have lots of time to make and link up a project. As ever, grab the button from the sidebar and spread the word, the more projects linked up the more inspiration there will be! A comment here and there to your fellow linkers wouldn't go amiss either :)
