Welcome to this month's New to Me link party, where we celebrate the trials and triumphs of having a go at something new.
This month all of my New to Me's are animal related, I am not quite sure why it certainly wasn't planned :)
First up
a New to Me pattern, Whiskers the Fox, from Ann's Orchard Needlework
Then
Two new paper piecing patterns tested for Tartankiwi
and finally Denis the Dinosaur!
My very first attempt at a stuffed toy!
When I saw the pattern in a recent Bustle and Sew magazine I thought it would be a great project for my first attempt at toy making, but didn't do anything about it. Then I got an email telling me that kits for the Dinosaur Softie were going on offer for a short period, so I decided to dive right in and order one straight away.
Despite the kit being advertised as suitable for a child, it wasn't all plain sailing I can tell you. I ran out of the green thread/floss and had to use a substitute to finish off the second leg and attach the legs and arms. The kit also came supplied with beads for the eyes, but I decided to stitch colonial knots instead, which meant that I also ran out of the black thread too!
The instructions for attaching the legs and arms were just that - "stitch into place". Having never attempted anything like this before I could have done with a bit more guidance.
We got there in the end and I am sure that it will look good on the gorgeous grandson's bedroom shelf, but it wasn't quite as easy as I had anticipated.
I bought a kit and a pattern for two more soft toys when I was at the Knitting and Stitching show. Fingers crossed that they are more fulsome in their instructions and their supplies :)
So, that's my New to Me's this month now it is your turn. Link up and celebrate the trials and tribulations of
trying something new and, of course, encourage and support your fellow
bloggers who have moved out of their comfort zones this month too. As
ever the link party will remain open until 23.59 GMT on May 31st, so
if you are thinking of trying something new this month but haven't yet
here is the nudge that you need. Grab the link party button and take the
plunge! Check out the linkers and give them some blogger support for
their endeavours too.

Getting the green, white and gold on!
Happy St Patrick's Day!
![]() |
| Shamrock Hearts Cushion |
I have been working on some last minute makes for the EG exhibition and sale tomorrow, and with a St Patrick's Day celebration in view naturally green, white and gold were the top of my colour picks!
You may remember these display pegs?
They were made from a Bustle and Sew pattern a couple of years ago and they sit on the edge of my pen holder keeping a tight grip on all sorts of useful notes and things :)
I thought that they would be ideal for a quick and quirky make for the craft sale so dug out the pattern and searched through my stash for appropriate scraps.
Green, white and gold naturally!
And here they are, another flock of birds ready to fly off to new homes. These are such fun to do, so I hope they sell well and give me an excuse to make another flock next year :)
That's my finish for this week's TGIFF link party, now it is your turn to link up your finishes and add to the St Patrick's Day festivities with a celebration of your own. Check out the other linkers and congratulate them on achieving that Friday finish feeling too :)

Making me Happy
There have been lots of posts around Blogland on the topics of resolutions, buzzwords for the year, and similar themes. I am not going to bore you though with my New Year resolutions, which I am sure you will be delighted to know :)
Instead I am sharing with you my first make of the year, which sums up my outlook for 2015 rather neatly!
The embroidered and appliqued front is from the Happy Hoop Art pattern by Helen at Bustle and Sew. The original pattern is for a framed Embroidery Hoop and I was originally going to finish mine that way, but decided that I would rather have a cushion instead, so a cushion it is. I added 2.5" strips of cream/red dot fabric around the embroidered panel to make a 16.5" cushion front.
I found the perfect backing fabric in my stash, bought at a market stall in France last summer and waiting for the right project to come along!
I couldn't find the right buttons for a button backing and I really need to replenish my zip stash, so a quick and simple envelope back was the order of the day.
This was my first attempt at free-machine embroidery on the Bernina, and I can't say that it was a wholly wonderful experience, so I might have to bite the bullet and watch that instructional video after all :)
I hope like me your 2015 will be filled with "more of what makes you happy"

Ho, Ho, Ho and on We Sew - February Link Up and Coffee Lovers Set
Paula and I are delighted to welcome you to the second of our monthly Ho,Ho,Ho and on We Sew Link Parties. With the Winter Olympics in full swing and the first snow of the winter here last week, it doesn't seem so strange to be planning a Christmas project :)
Thanks to the lovely bloggers who linked up last month with Paula at Mud, Pies and Pins, and thanks especially to Kristy and Alyce who provided the great pattern giveaway for January, which was won by Karen
This month's giveaway is another wonderful prize donated by Helen of Bustle and Sew, if you win this prize you will have plenty of inspiration for this year's Christmas and Holiday gifts. Helen has very kindly donated a copy of her Handstitched Christmas eBook!
There are 15 great Christmas patterns for you to try in the eBook, and with patterns ranging from Carol singing mice to Reindeer Tote Bags, there is bound to be something to take your fancy :) You can find details of all the patterns in the ebook here
To be in with a chance of winning the eBook, all you need do is link up below a Christmas project that you have completed this month. A random winner will be picked from all of the entries linked by the end of the month.
If you are struggling to think of a project to make how about this Coffee Lovers gift set?
The set comprises of a Place Mat, Mug Cosy and Cafetiere/French Press/Coffee Plunger Cosy and would make a lovely gift for a Coffee-loving friend or relation. This one is destined for my Sister-in-Law!
To make the gift set you will need the following supplies;
1FQ Christmas fabric for the exterior of the Cosies and star of the placemat
0.5yard fabric for the backing of the placemat and lining of the Cosies. (You will have enough fabric to use for the binding and button loops if you wish)
1F8th of 2 contrast fabrics for the placemat front and binding
Scrap of ribbon (optional) for button closure
0.5yard Insul-Bright heat-resistant wadding/batting
3 red buttons
The Cafetiere/French Press/Coffee Plunger and Mug Cosies are made in the same way, the only difference is in the dimensions.
I quilted a FMQ holly design using Aurifil 50wt shade 2892, can you tell that I am having fun experimenting with the modified FMQ foot??
I found it helped to draw the motif out on a notepad beforehand and refer to it when I was stitching.
When you have quilted your fabric pieces, trim them to the dimensions of your Cafetiere and Mug. For information my pieces were trimmed to the following dimensions;
If you are making a fabric loop closure you will need a piece of fabric 1.5" wide and to the same measurement as the ribbon loop given above.
Fold the fabric strip in half lengthways wrong sides together and press, then open out the folded strip and fold the raw edges into the centre fold and press again. Fold the strip in half again lengthways giving you a fabric strip that now has one closed folded edge and one open folded edge. Topstitch along the length of the open folded edge.
Fold the topstitched strip in half widthways and with the raw edges side by side flatten the top fold to make a V-shaped fold. Stitch across the bottom of the V
You can see this more clearly in the photo above.
Mark the halfway point of one short edge and pin the button loop or ribbon closure to the backing, matching the raw edges. Stitch the loop closure to the cosy using a scant 0.25" seam to ensure that the stitching will not show when the binding is attached.
With raw edges together pin and stitch the binding strip around the exterior edge of the cosy, mitring the corners as you go.
Fold the binding over to the back of the cosy and handstitch the binding, catching the button loop closure or ribbon closure as you go.
Attach a red button to the middle of the opposite short edge on the exterior.
Wrap your cosy around a Cafetiere and Mug and enjoy a long, hot mug of coffee!
To finish off your gift set though, how about a quilted placemat to match?
Christmas fabric
The Christmas fabric triangles will only be joined at the points to make the points of the star as shown above.
To two of the pairs join a second contrast fabric square at each end of the pair.
Join the remaining pairs to opposite sides of the 6.5" square, making sure that the star points are facing in the right direction to complete the star.
Admire your work then squirrel the set away for Christmas and congratulate yourself on ticking a gift off the list so early :)
If you are looking for some Christmas-themed fabric for your makes, the 50% off sale is still on at The Fat Quarter Christmas Cloth store, just saying :)
I plan to add a bag of Christmas Coffee and maybe some handmade truffles to this set when the time comes!
This is also one of my finishes for Q1 of the FAL!

So, now it is your turn. Link up your Christmas/Holiday/Gift projects to be in with a chance of winning this month's giveaway.
The Link Party will remain open until 23.59GMT on February 28th, so you still have lots of time to make and link up a project. As ever, grab the button from the sidebar and spread the word, the more projects linked up the more inspiration there will be! A comment here and there to your fellow linkers wouldn't go amiss either :)

Creating the quilted fabric
Measure the width and height of your Mug and Cafetiere and cut pieces of your exterior fabric to match these dimensions plus 0.5" all round. Cut pieces of the wadding and exterior fabric to the original dimensions plus 1" all round. Layer up the pieces in the following order;- Top - Exterior Fabric
- Middle - Heat-resistant wadding, shiny side down
- Bottom - Backing Fabric
I quilted a FMQ holly design using Aurifil 50wt shade 2892, can you tell that I am having fun experimenting with the modified FMQ foot??
I found it helped to draw the motif out on a notepad beforehand and refer to it when I was stitching.

- Cafetiere - Height 6" Width 11"
- Mug - Height 3.25" Width 9.25"
Button Loops
I made two different button loop closures, a ribbon loop closure and a fabric loop closure. If I was making the set again I think that I would make both closures fabric loop closures as it seems sturdier. If you choose to make a ribbon loop closure you will just need a length of ribbon that is twice the gap between the edges of your cosy plus 0.5" and thin enough to fit between the handles of the mug or Cafetiere. If you are making a fabric loop closure you will need a piece of fabric 1.5" wide and to the same measurement as the ribbon loop given above.
Fold the fabric strip in half lengthways wrong sides together and press, then open out the folded strip and fold the raw edges into the centre fold and press again. Fold the topstitched strip in half widthways and with the raw edges side by side flatten the top fold to make a V-shaped fold. Stitch across the bottom of the V
You can see this more clearly in the photo above.
Binding
Cut and piece together sufficient 2" binding strips to bind your Cafetiere and Mug Cosies. Fold the pieced strips in half lengthways and press.Mark the halfway point of one short edge and pin the button loop or ribbon closure to the backing, matching the raw edges.
Piecing a block for the placemat
From your fabrics cut the following;Christmas fabric
- 8 x 3 and 7/8" triangles
- 1 x 6.5" square
- 8 x 3 and 7/8" triangles
- 4 x 3.5" squares
- 2" x 54" binding strip
The Christmas fabric triangles will only be joined at the points to make the points of the star as shown above.
To two of the pairs join a second contrast fabric square at each end of the pair.
Join the remaining pairs to opposite sides of the 6.5" square, making sure that the star points are facing in the right direction to complete the star.
Quilting the placemat
Layer and baste the placemat pieces and quilt. I outline quilted the star shape just for a change :)Binding
Square up the block and then bind the placemat in the same way that you bound the cosies except without the incorporation of the button loops.Admire your work then squirrel the set away for Christmas and congratulate yourself on ticking a gift off the list so early :)
If you are looking for some Christmas-themed fabric for your makes, the 50% off sale is still on at The Fat Quarter Christmas Cloth store, just saying :)

And Quilting On!
Having completed the HST BOM this month already, I am all enthused to tick another one of the list!
So this week's sewing has all been about my And Sew On BOM wallhanging. Having decided not to make the final block to have instead a 2 x 4 arrangement of the blocks, I dug out some appropriately themed fabric for the sashing and some calico for the backing. The back will rarely see the light of day, so it made sense to use a plain, basic fabric for the back.
Apologies for the odd angle of the photo, the quilt is presently draped across the top of the sofa bed in my sewing room, and no I haven't taken to sleeping with my sewing machine!
I have quilted in the ditch around the blocks and straight line quilted the sashing blocks and borders, but now I am a bit stuck. I am not really sure how to quilt the blocks. Whilst quilting the sashing I was watching Leah Day's Free Motion Quilting Class on Craftsy, so was feeling all ambitious about tackling different Free Motion Quilting patterns in the various blocks, but I am not 100% convinced that that is the way to go, so suggestions would be very welcome :)
Recently, Catherine at Knotted Cotton was looking for someone to go halves with her on a purchase of Oakshott Cottons. Having never bought any Oakshott before, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to experience the loveliness of these fabrics without breaking the bank! This bundle of loveliness arrived in the post this week, and I have been admiring them ever since. Now I know what all the fuss is about, they are just beautiful!
Post of a different kind, but no less welcome, has been pinging into my email all week too. The list of giveaway sponsors for the Ho,Ho,Ho and on We Sew Link party just gets longer and longer!
This month's giveaway is the wonderful Ornamental and Sew Seasonal Pattern Bundle from Quiet Play's Craftsy store
The Link Party is open over at Mud, Pies and Pins until the end of the month so there is still plenty of time to get started on your Christmas and Holiday projects and link them up to be in with a chance of winning.
If you are looking to add some Christmas Fabric to your stash check out the Christmas Sale at the Fat Quarter Shop. Check out too the generous sponsors we have lined up for you in the coming months!

That's enough WIP's to be going on with for now I think :)

It's for the Birds Blog Hop and a Giveaway

If you are new to my blog, welcome, I hope you enjoy the projects I have today and feel free to wander around and explore my little patch of Blogland.
I have been itching to try my hand at Freehand Machine Embroidery for a while but hadn't plucked up the courage. So when Madame Samm announced the It's for the Birds Blog Hop I decided that the time had come. I already had the perfect bird-themed projects thanks to Helen at Bustle and Sew.
We recently spent a lovely weekend with my brother and sister-in-law at their chalet on the East Coast of Scotland. Amazingly the weather was kind to us so we were able to enjoy these glorious views.
I wanted to make a special present to thank them for their great hospitality and Bustle and Sew's Seagull Cushion fitted the bill perfectly.
Having never tried Freehand Machine Embroidery before I was a bit wary but it couldn't have been more enjoyable, thanks to Helen's lovely pattern and great instructions. The embroidered seagull was really straightforward to put together, even for a complete beginner like me.
Having tackled the first challenge of this cushion, the second was to try printing on fabric for the first time. I used this Transfer Artist Paper.
I hadn't realised just how stiff the fabric would be as a result of the image transfer, which meant that any needle/pin holes remained after the pins were removed as you can see below.
I might try another method of image transfer next time, and there will be a next time as I was so thrilled with how this cushion turned out that I plan to make one for myself.
In the meantime though I can enjoy the second bird project made for the Blog Hop, which was from another pattern by Bustle and Sew
Emboldened by the success of the Freehand Machine Embroidery on the Seagull Cushion I decided to have a go at "Birds on a Wire".
These were so much fun to make. As regular readers will know I love to upcycle fabric, usually from my husband and sons' shirts, so you can guess where the check fabric came from for the birds! Just for a change this time I also raided my own wardrobe; the aqua fabric was originally the pocket of one of my old dressing gowns!
The body fabric pieces were backed with fusible web and then ironed to felt and then the outline of each bird was traced on with an air-erasable marker.
You can just see the outline in the photo above.
The wing fabrics were backed with fusible web and then attached to the body fabric. The machine embroidered outline was completed and then the bird shapes were cut out. This was such an easy way to manage the potentially fiddly bird tails.
Glued to wooden clothes pegs and they are all ready to perch. Don't they look like they are having a good gossip on the line?
These will be so handy in my sewing room, but I think they would look great in a girly bedroom too.
Thanks to the lovely Helen, they could be decorating your sewing room or bedroom too. Helen has generously donated three Bustle and Sew PDF patterns for one lucky winner.
The winner will receive a copy of the Birds on a Wire pattern, Seagull Cushion Cover pattern and, in keeping with the It's for the Birds Blog Hop theme a copy of this Summer Birdie Bag pattern too!
So what do you have to do to win these great patterns?
Simply fly over to the Bustle and Sew website and check out Helen's patterns then fly back to leave a comment telling me which Bustle and Sew pattern you would like to tackle. If you are a follower tell me that in a second comment for an extra chance to win.The winner will be drawn randomly on Monday, May 19th at 18.00 GMT.
GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED!
Please leave your email address in the form commenteratgmaildotcom in your comment if you are a no-reply blogger. In the event that the winner is a no-reply commenter and I cannot find a way to contact you I will redraw, sorry!
If you try something new this month don't forget to come back and link up to my monthly New to Me in 2013 link party on May 25th!
Check out these other Blog Hoppers posting more great bird-themed projects today too.
Good luck!
